Michelle Phan is a Vietnamese – American Youtuber, born on 11 April 1987 Phan is famous for her beauty vlogging. She started her YouTube journey on 19 Jul 2006 and has over 9 million subscribers on her YouTube channel. She has published over 256 videos on her channel and got over a billion views. Phan has over 2 million followers on her Instagram.

Michelle was born in Boston, Massachusetts in the USA and spent her childhood with her elder brother, she also has a younger half-sister. Later Phan’s family moved to Tampa, Florida. She has done schooling at Tampa Bay Technical High School and dropped out of Ringling College of Art due to financial problems but later in 2014, they awarded her with an Honorary Doctorate of Arts degree.

Phan’s parents were of Vietnamese origin, but her biological father left her mother when she was very young, her mother remarried but after some time she broke her second marriage due to years of abuse by her step-father, and she then shifted to Tampa with her kids.

Phan started blogging in 2015 and started sharing and discussing her makeup ideas on her personal blogs. She got a good response and got a request for more instructions. With the growing demand for her makeup tips she decided to create video tutorials and started posting on Xanga, her username was Ricebunn and in 2007 she started publishing regular makeup tutorial videos on her YouTube channel.

Two of Michelle’s video tutorials “How To Get Lady Gaga’s Eyes” got featured in BuzzFeed in 2009 and also in 2010. She went viral after the success of these two videos and gained millions of YouTube subscribers. Phan featured some of Lancôme’s beauty products in her video, which helped her to become the official makeup artist of Lancôme and she became the first American-Vietnamese spokesperson of the brand.

In 2011, she co-founded a monthly subscription service for a cosmetic product called MyGlam, later renamed Ipsy in 2012. Ipsy has also sponsored the Generation Beauty conference. In 2012, she has also partnered with YouTube advertising and launched a multi-channel network called FAWN.

L’Oreal launched EM Cosmetics (EMC) by Michelle Phan in August 2013, the brand was dedicated to Phan’s mother. In the year 2016, Phan shared a post on her Instagram and said that she has bought L’Oreal’s share of EM Cosmetics (EMC) through Ipsy. She relaunched the company in 2017 after the acquisition from Ipsy. In order to focus on the growth of EM Cosmetics (EMC), she later resigned from Ipsy.

To create content for millennials, in May 2014, she announced that she will be partnering with Endemol Beyond USA and they will feature talented people from YouTube. In 2015 they launched The ICON network, which was dedicated to ‘entertainment, beauty, and lifestyle,’ it was launched online and on television also via Roku. Phan launched Shift Music Group in partnership with the Cutting Edge Group in 2014 September. She has also published a beauty book called Make Up: Your Life Guide to Beauty, Style, and Success — Online and Off in 2014 October.

She was named to Forbes 30 under 30 lists and also Inc. 30 under 30 list in 2015. She also took Ipsy at over $500 million by raising $100 million in value for the company. Phan founded a company in 2018, which was specialized in music licensing, the startup was called Thematic.

Ultra Records sued her in July 2014 for a copyright infringement issue related to the music, she had used in her YouTube video, in the US District Court of LA, and demanded $150,000 per infringement, and the total amount was up to $7.5 million. Phan’s said that they got permission from Ultra Records to use their music and in response, she filed a countersuit against them. Later they both agreed to settle this issue out of the court.

Phan has done Chopsticks as Hands Makeup Challenge in one of her videos, which she posted on 24 March 2020. She did the challenge with her friend James Miju, it was a ten-minute challenge and they both used chopsticks to hold their makeup brushes and did their makeup.

Phan is not just a great makeup artist but also a responsible citizen, she posted a video where she tried to educate everyone about the Covid-19 pandemic. She said we all need to put our collective efforts to deal with the situation and also guided us about the precautions we need to take during this tough time.
